Referral credits expire 12 months after the Grant Date. Here's where that bites in the order flow

The saving isn't just whether you use a referral link — it's when. Credits expire a year after they're granted, and referrers can only bank 10 successful referrals a year.

Tesla's own support page states that referral and loyalty Tesla Credits expire 12 months after the Grant Date — unused credit is simply lost, not refunded or extended. Referrers are separately capped at 10 successful referrals per year. Credits can be spent on Supercharging, upgrades and the Tesla shop, but they are not redeemable as cash. That detail sits on Tesla's central support page rather than a UK-specific one, so treat the expiry mechanic as the reliable fact and confirm how it's labelled on your own UK account before assuming the wording matches exactly.

Where this actually bites

Not at ordering — after it. The referral link mechanic you already know doesn't change: open the link, configure, order, and the 650-mile Supercharging benefit is applied automatically. What this fact adds is what happens next. From the Grant Date, a clock starts, and whatever hasn't been spent after 12 months is gone. If you take delivery and don't drive much in the first year, or you're saving the benefit for a specific long trip that keeps slipping, that's a real way to lose value you were entitled to — quietly, with no reminder built into the process described here.

First establish which of the two things you actually hold

The expiry rule is documented for Tesla Credits, and the UK buyer benefit is described in Supercharging miles. Those are not obviously the same object, and the difference decides whether the 12-month clock above is yours to worry about at all.

So before you plan around an expiry date, look at what your account is actually showing you: a credit balance denominated in pounds, or an allowance denominated in miles. The wording attached to whichever one you have is the wording that governs it. We flag this rather than smoothing it over because a page that tells you confidently that your miles expire on a credits timetable is asserting something it cannot see from outside your account — and getting it wrong in either direction costs you: assume no expiry and you may lose a balance, assume a hard deadline and you may rush a purchase you didn't want.

If it is a credit balance, spend it in the right order

Credits are not cash, are not refundable, and cannot be cashed out — so the practical failure is not overspending, it is a balance quietly reaching its date unspent. That happens most often to the owner who charges at home and rarely Superchargers, which is precisely the owner least likely to notice. If a deadline applies to you, the spending routes differ enormously in how fast they can absorb a balance:

• A shop purchase clears any amount immediately and is the only route that works on a deadline regardless of how you drive. It is also the one people think of last.
• A software or hardware upgrade absorbs a large balance in one go — but only makes sense if you wanted the upgrade anyway. Buying one purely to beat a clock converts a saving into a purchase.
• Supercharging drains slowly and only if you drive. For a home-charging owner it is the route least likely to finish the balance in time, which is the mismatch worth spotting early rather than in the final month.

The order matters more than the reminder does. A note in your calendar at ten months only helps if, when it fires, you already know which of those three routes fits how you actually use the car.

For referrers, the cap changes the maths too

If you're the one sharing a link rather than receiving the benefit, the 10-per-year cap means your eleventh successful referral in a calendar year doesn't earn a credit — the timing of when people use your link, not just how many, determines what you actually bank. Spreading referrals across the turn of a calendar year, rather than bunching them, is one honest way to avoid hitting the cap unnecessarily.
