The FSD purchase option disappeared. A guide to what replaced it
A capital cost became a running cost. The UK referral benefit did not change — but the reason it did not is the interesting part.
On 22 May 2026 the one-time Full Self-Driving purchase was withdrawn across Europe and the United Kingdom, replaced by a £99 monthly subscription. Because North America's referral benefit is an FSD trial, that change re-priced the referral there. Here it changes almost nothing — and the reason is worth understanding.
Step 1 — what did not change
The UK referral benefit: 650 free Supercharging miles on a new Model 3 or Model Y. A pricing change to a software product does not alter a reward denominated in charging distance.
Step 2 — why the UK benefit is not a trial
Approval, not pricing, is the gate. North America runs an FSD trial as its referral benefit because supervised driving is deployed there. The UK's position on supervised self-driving has followed its own process, and the mainland European timetable is separate again — an EU-level discussion at the end of June 2026 was discussion-only, with the next window in October 2026.
Step 3 — the test this gives you
Any UK-facing page promising free FSD from a referral has copied North American material without noticing the market. That single check discounts a large share of inaccurate UK referral content, and it is quicker than assessing whether a page looks trustworthy.
Step 4 — what a subscription changes for owners generally
The shape of the decision. A capability that could be bought once is now a monthly line that can be started and stopped, which suits seasonal use — a road-trip month on, the rest off. It also means FSD no longer travels with a car at resale, because it follows the account and the billing relationship.
Step 5 — the reference price it sets
If a UK referral benefit were ever restructured into a trial, three months would be priced at three times £99. This dispatch flags that as a hypothetical rather than a forecast — but it is the reason a UK referral guide reads FSD pricing news at all.
Step 6 — what to do differently as a UK buyer
Nothing. Open the referral link before configuring, read the order summary before paying, and note the Grant Date when the miles appear — they run on a six-month clock rather than the twelve months most pages quote.
What the change means if you are keeping the car a long time
Worth thinking about even though it is not referral news. A capability that can only be rented has a different ownership profile from one that could be bought: there is no sunk cost to justify keeping, and no residual value to lose by cancelling. For a long-term owner that is arguably better — you pay in the months you want it — and it does mean the total spent over several years can exceed what a one-off purchase would have cost. Neither of those facts touches a UK referral, which is charging distance and has no renewal at all.
The wider pattern worth noticing
One programme, three markets, three rewards: a software trial in North America, roughly 2,000 km of Supercharging in mainland Europe since April 2026, and 650 miles in the UK. Almost every inaccurate referral claim you will read is one market's answer applied to another market's buyer.
