A second referral extends the clock on the first — the UK timeline

Most referral pages mention an expiry and stop. The rule that decides whether a reward is ever spent is the one underneath: a further successful referral extends the credits you already hold. Here it is on a timeline, with the UK's own reward alongside it.

The two clocks, one more time

Tesla Credits — the sharer's reward — expire 12 months from their Grant Date. Supercharging distance — the UK buyer's 650 miles — expires 6 months from its Grant Date. Same programme, two deadlines, and the Grant Date is when the reward is posted to an account rather than when the order was placed.

The extension rule, stated precisely

When a further referral succeeds while you are still holding credits, all credits in the account are extended to 12 months from the newest Grant Date. Not "each batch runs its own year" — the newest grant pulls the whole balance forward with it.

A three-referral timeline

  1. January grant. Left alone, those credits would expire the following January.
  2. May grant. New credits arrive — and the January balance now runs to the following May too. The January deadline is gone.
  3. October grant. Everything in the account, January included, now runs to the following October.

The January credits have quietly gained nine months of life without the holder doing anything except referring two more buyers. Nothing announces this; the balance simply carries a later date.

Where the UK buyer's miles sit on that timeline

Outside it. A buyer's 650-mile allowance has one deadline and no extension path — it is not credits, and no further referral moves it. That asymmetry is worth knowing, because a sharer reassured by the extension rule may pass that comfort on to a buyer for whom it is simply untrue.

Who this changes behaviour for

Anyone who refers occasionally. A one-off sharer will almost certainly watch a balance expire; a sharer with any regular cadence will rarely lose credits at all. If you are holding credits and a friend is considering an order, the timing of that order is worth more to you than the size of the reward.

The cap that sits on top

Only the first ten successful referrals per calendar year pay the sharer, and the counter resets on 1 January. So the extension mechanism runs inside an annual limit: referral eleven extends nothing because it pays nothing.

The warning email is the last prompt

Tesla emails 30 days before a balance lapses. Credits cannot be reissued once expired, so there is no conversation available afterwards. Treat that email as a deadline rather than a notification: either redeem, or land another referral inside the window.

What redemption actually offers

Credits are spent through the Loot Box in the Tesla app, and redemptions are final. Documented limits: no cash, no transfers, no reissues, and not valid for gift cards or alcohol. Whether Tesla Shop merchandise is redeemable is genuinely disputed between reliable sources, so the current answer is whatever your own Loot Box lists. The amount each referral pays is likewise reported inconsistently — $250 in some places, $500 in others — which is why this page describes the mechanism and points you at your own account.
