Inventory and ex-demo cars in the UK: can a referral link attach?
Almost all referral guidance is written for one buyer: someone configuring a brand-new car from scratch. Plenty of UK Teslas are not bought that way. Here is each route, and whether a referral can attach to it.
Route 1 — a new configured order
The standard case. Open the referral link, configure, and confirm the benefit line — 650 free Supercharging miles — appears on the order summary before you pay. Nothing surprising happens here, and this is the route every referral page describes.
Route 2 — inventory stock
Already-built cars ordered from a listing rather than a configurator. The mechanism is the same: the referral must be attached to the session before the order is placed. Two differences matter. The flow is much faster, so it is easy to arrive from a search result with nothing attached — open the link before you start browsing stock. And the reward itself differs: the UK programme applies a price reduction on inventory vehicles rather than the mileage credit, which is the one case where a referral does touch the transaction value.
Route 3 — ex-demo and service-loaner cars
Sold as demonstrator or used stock depending on the car's history and how Tesla lists it. Where a car is sold as used, it sits outside the new-order flow the referral programme is built around. This page will not promise you it cannot work, because listing types change — it will give you the check that matters: if the order screen shows no benefit before you pay, there is nothing to recover afterwards.
Route 4 — approved used and private sales
A private sale involves no Tesla order at all, so there is no referral. Tesla-sold used stock is a used transaction rather than a new order. Treat a referral as unavailable on this route and be pleasantly surprised if a benefit line appears, rather than planning around one.
Route 5 — lease, salary sacrifice and company cars
Frequently the most relevant UK route, and the one where the answer is procedural. If a leasing company or employer places the order, the referral attaches to their order or to nothing — and the benefit lands on the account that holds the order, which may not be the driver's. Ask, in writing and before signing: will a referral link be applied, and will the benefit appear on the order summary?
The eligibility layer that applies to every route
Route is only half the question. The car has to be eligible: Model 3 and Model Y are, Model S and Model X have been outside the programme since March 2026, and Cybertruck is not sold in the UK. A flawless referral on an ineligible car pays nobody.
