You cancelled a UK order. What happens to the referral?
Orders get cancelled for ordinary reasons: a trim changed, a delivery date slipped, a household plan changed. The referral question that follows is usually asked backwards. People ask whether the referral is "still valid". The useful question is what it was ever attached to.
What a referral is attached to
The order. Not your account, not your email address, not the code. So when the order ends, the thing the referral was attached to no longer exists — and a replacement order is a new order, which needs its own referral link opened before it is configured.
What that means for the sharer
A referral that has not reached its Grant Date shows as pending, and grants follow settled transactions. A cancelled order is not one, so the honest expectation is that a pending referral attached to it does not become a grant.
There is a genuine consolation, and it runs the opposite way to how people assume: the annual cap counts successful referrals, so a referral that never granted has not consumed one of the sharer's ten slots for the year.
What the buyer keeps
Nothing needed keeping, because nothing was consumed. There is no per-buyer limit on using a referral link, so re-ordering with one is straightforward. Two things do need doing properly:
- Open a fresh link for the new order. Nothing carries over from the previous session.
- Re-check the order summary. The 650-mile benefit line must be visible before you pay, exactly as on the first attempt.
The mistake people make on the second attempt
Assuming the account now "has" the referral because it worked once. It does not. The attachment lives on the order, and a buyer who has already done this correctly is oddly more likely to skip the step the second time.
The case where re-ordering changes eligibility
Worth checking rather than assuming. Model S and Model X left the referral programme in March 2026, and Cybertruck is not sold in the UK, so a cancellation that becomes a switch to a Model S carries no referral benefit however clean your sequence. Model 3 and Model Y remain the eligible UK cars.
If you are cancelling to switch to inventory stock

What about a delivery date that slipped?
Not a cancellation, and nothing to redo. If the order number survives, the referral rides along. Changing colour or wheels on an existing order is likewise an edit rather than a new order. The test is simple: are you being asked to place a new order, or is Tesla amending the one you have?
Timing, if the re-order is months away
Open the link when you actually order. A referral link is not a coupon you hold in reserve — it is the route into an ordering session, and the session is what carries the referral. There is no advantage to opening one early, and the sharer's credits run their own clock from the Grant Date regardless.
