The pending window: what happens between your friend’s order and the grant
Between a referred order being placed and the reward appearing, the Tesla app shows the referral as pending. That word causes a lot of avoidable worry, because it looks exactly like the state a broken referral would be stuck in. It is not. Here is the sequence.
Step 1 — attachment (the only irreversible moment)
The referral attaches when the order is placed, through the link. If it attached, the order summary showed the benefit line before payment. If it did not, nothing pends — the referral simply never exists, and it cannot be added afterwards.
Step 2 — pending
Recognised, not yet granted. Nothing is spendable, and nothing should be: every expiry clock in the programme starts at the Grant Date, not at the order date. A referral that pends for six weeks has cost nobody anything, because the countdown has not begun.
Step 3 — the Grant Date
Grants follow settled transactions rather than orders, which is why the pending state exists at all — configurations change, orders get cancelled, deliveries slip. When the transaction settles, the pending entry becomes a balance with a date attached. For a UK buyer that balance is 650 Supercharging miles; for the referrer it is Tesla Credits.
Step 4 — the clock
This is the part almost every referral page gets wrong. Supercharging distance expires six months from the Grant Date. Tesla Credits — the referrer's side — run twelve. Two clocks, one account, and a 30-day warning email before either lapses. An expired balance cannot be reissued.
The three things that would genuinely mean it failed
1. The link never attached. No benefit line on the order summary, and no recovery afterwards.
2. The car was not eligible. Model S and Model X left the programme in March 2026, and Cybertruck is not sold in the UK at all. A perfect referral on an ineligible car produces nothing for either party.
3. The referrer's annual cap was met. Only the first ten successful referrals in a calendar year pay the sharer. Note that this affects their side only — your 650 miles are unaffected.
How long is too long?
There is no published service level, so this page will not invent one. The useful frame is that pending tracks delivery timelines rather than order timelines, so a long build slot means a long pending period, and neither costs anything. If the car has been delivered and the balance still has not appeared, that is the point at which the escalation sequence becomes relevant.
What the buyer should do while it pends
Nothing, other than noting that the miles have not started their clock yet. There is no action available and no advantage to chasing. What is worth doing is writing down the Grant Date when it does appear, and adding six months to it.
What the referrer should do
Count granted referrals rather than conversations. Pending entries do not consume a cap slot, so a referrer tracking their ten-per-year allowance should read the granted balance rather than the pending list — which is also where the only authoritative figure for what a referral pays lives. Public reporting quotes that amount as $250 in some places and $500 in others; both cannot be current, so this page states the mechanism and points at the account.
