Already placed your order? Here's the checklist for whether a referral code can still count
By the time most people think to look for a referral code, they've already started — or finished — configuring their car. If that's you, here's the honest checklist for exactly where you stand, stage by stage.
The one rule underneath every case
A referral link has to be open before you start configuring. Once it's attached, Tesla recognises it through checkout automatically. There's no field to type a code into later, and no support process that adds one retroactively once an order is placed. Everything below is really just working out which side of that line you're on.

"But I already used a link — can I swap it for a better one?"
We haven't found an official, documented way to swap a referral link once it's attached to an order that's already been placed. If you're in that situation, the honest answer is to ask Tesla support directly rather than take a third-party site's word for it — don't assume either way.
"I forgot completely — is there any recourse?"
Not for that order. It's a genuinely common situation, not a rare mistake — most buyers have never heard of the referral programme until after they've started shopping. The cancel-and-reorder question, answered with arithmetic
The recourse section above ends where most guides do: there is one route, which is cancelling and ordering again through a link. What nobody does is the sum that usually argues against it — so here it is, because talking you into an action we benefit from would be the easy thing to do.
What you would be gaining is 650 free Supercharging miles, whose value depends on how you charge and is modest on any assumption. What you would be putting at risk is rather more:
- Your place in the delivery queue. A new order is a new order. If you had a good slot or a specific configuration in stock, that is the real exposure — and in a tight quarter it dwarfs the benefit.
- Today's price and terms. Reordering means ordering at current pricing, not the pricing you locked. If anything has moved against you since, that difference lands immediately.
- Your deposit position. What happens on cancellation is in your own order agreement. That is not a general fact we can supply — it is the first document to read, and it decides whether this question is even worth asking.
- The £50,000 line, if you are near it. A reconfiguration is a chance to slip over the VED supplement threshold without noticing, which would cost several times the referral.
So the honest answer splits by timing rather than by principle. Very early, before a deposit, or still configuring? Starting again is cheap and obviously worth it. Order placed, car in production, delivery scheduled? The referral is almost certainly the smallest number in that decision, and cancelling to capture it is the tail wagging the dog.
What definitely does not work
Worth stating plainly, because these get suggested in forums and none of them are routes:
- Emailing a code to Tesla after the order exists.
- Giving it to the delivery specialist on handover day.
- Asking support to "just add it" as a goodwill gesture.
